We’ve already heard that BMW will be giving its 6 Series a bit of a mission change to compete with the Porsche 911 and will be creating an 8 Series to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe. This will give BMW two new coupes that will compete in two brand-new segments for the Bavarian brand. So, with the knowledge that two new BMW coupes are in development, which could this test mule caught driving around in camouflage be?

This BMW test mule that’s been caught running around seems to have an identity that’s hard to pin down. The biggest problem with trying to figure out which BMW it is, is the size. It seems a bit too big to be a 911-fighter and it also seems a bit too small to be an S-Class Coupe competitor. In a way, it kind of seems like the current 6 Series, which is a bit of a ‘tweener. Plus, there are some aspects of the car that could indicate both a 6 Series or an 8 Series.

The aggressively sweeping roofline looks quite sporty, possibly indicating a sort of 911-fighting 6 Series. Although, how long the rear end seems to be could indicate a more luxurious grand tourer, much like an 8 Series. So this car is hard to figure out. The built-in ducktail decklid spoiler also looks pretty sporty, so maybe this is actually a 6er? It also has exhaust pipes and wheels that are similar to the newly premiered G30-generation 5 Series. If so, the case for this being a 911-fighting 6 Series could be growing stronger. If you ask us, we’re going 6 Series, as it seems to be the right size, have the more aggressive styling of a sports car and has some 5 Series-like touches.

We could officially find out sooner than later, though, because this car seems to be near production-ready. Its lack of seemingly fake body panels makes us feel that this is a production-ready car that’s doing some final testing. If this is the case, we could see a world premiere of whatever this ends up being in early-mid 2017 with a production car hitting streets in late 2017 to early 2018. We’ll find out soon enough.
