BMW is preparing the return of the iconic 8 Series, a badge they haven’t used since the 90s. Now the Bavarians are rumored to give the new 8 Series family three different models – a coupe, a convertible and a gran tourer. While the current BMW 6 Series, and even the 4 Series to an extent, can provide great grand touring pleasure, the BMW 8 Series will put the emphasis on ‘grand’. With Mercedes-Benz pushing the S Class Coupe and Cabriolet, BMW needed something to fight back. The current 6er is too small and not nearly luxurious enough to compete. So BMW needs something bigger, badder and more luxurious.
Based on the current CLAR architecture that underpins the 7 Series and the 5 Series, the 8 Series will be the longest car in BMW’s fleet. Longer even than the current 7 Series and it will be the brand’s flagship coupe. It will also pack all of the modern luxurious, and possibly even more, of the 7 Series, as well as its higher-end engines.
The renderings put together by L’Automobile give us a view at what the next 8 Series could look like. The images show a long, sleek and sporty 8er Coupe and Cabriolet, with the typical BMW design cues – short overhangs, long hood, sloping roofline and Hoffmeister Kink.
The front end is bold, premium and imposing, while the rear end is sleek, and inline with the requirements of that segment.
Also expect the BMW 8 Series to be a bit sportier of a take on the Mercedes S Class Coupe. BMW won’t go full-blown luxury like the folks in Stuttgart, but instead pack some genuine performance blood into the 8 Series.
