The upcoming BMW X7 is well underway and approaching fast. While it has a target date of 2018, expect BMW to unveil it sometime mid to late-2017. To give us a brief hint as to what we might see from the BMW X7, some spy shots have surfaced of the big brute driving around on German roads.
BMW seems to be following a similar recipe for the X7 as with the BMW X5. The proportions and shape look very similar, only larger. With the BMW X7 riding on the same CLAR architecture that underpins the new BMW 7 Series and 5 Series, it should remain pretty light and stiff for such a big SUV. It could also pack the same Carbon Core technology as the 7 Series, as the X7 rests in the upper echelon of BMW’s model range. The 5 Series lacks the Carbon Core bits that 7er has, but only because it’s at a lower price bracket. The X7 shouldn’t have that issue.
Carbon Core would help, too, as this seems to be a hulking brute of an SUV. It looks massive, the X7, and clearly will seat seven people, with an optional third row. There’s also quite short front overhang, which means it might actually have some sharp steering for such a big car. And with its new chassis, it might have a low center of gravity, despite being so tall, with all the carbon fiber bits in the roof structure and pillar.s
The BMW X7 will be built in the Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, as are all the other non-X1 BMW SUVs. This means that it could actually be cheaper to buy here in America than anywhere else. Expect the base engine to be BMW’s newly ubiquitous B58 3.0 liter turbocharged I6, with a twin-turbo V8 engine option and likely a plug-in hybrid variant as well. There have also been whispers of an M variant, possibly a BMW X7 M60i to match the BMW M760Li. We’ve also heard that there could be an ultra-luxurious variant, to compete with the Range Rover Autobiography and Bentley Bentayga.
