Older ALPINAs are very special cars. They were built in a time when the brand wasn’t all that popular or well-known and were designed to be faster, more impressive and more dynamic that the standard BMW they were built on. So any time we see an old ALPINA for sale, naturally we get very excited. Which was the case with this 1986 BMW ALPINA B7 Turbo.
On the surface, we were pumped to see this B7 Turbo, as it’s a very rare car. However, judging from what the seller and Bring-A-Trailer (where the car is listed) are saying, there’s something confusing going on. Typically, the BMW ALPINA B7 Turbo was based on the E28-generation BMW 535i, according to ALPINA’s website. But the seller claims this is one of the rare models built on the E28 M5 chassis, despite there being proof such a thing ever existed on ALPINA’s site. So we’re not sure if this ALPINA is actually built on an M5 or just a 535i.
Either way, though, this car has a 3.5 liter inline-six engine with a K27 turbocharger on it and a Brullen exhaust system. If it is based on the 535i, it makes 320 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. When paired with its five-speed manual transmission, the 535i-based ALPINA B7 Turbo can get from 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds, which is not bad at all for a car from 1986.
This specific car only has about 126,000 miles on it, which isn’t bad either. It also looks to be in superb condition, despite not being absolute concours condition, though the seller claims it had previously won several awards. It does carry a hefty price tag though, as its current bid is at $42,000. So you better really believe the seller if you’re willing to bid on this car.
