For avid BMW collectors, some cars simply stand out in the crowd. And while we may all drool over a really mint BMW E30 M3 or a BMW E46 M3 CSL, there are some cars, wearing the Bavarian roundel on their hood, that are even rarer. One such model is the famed BMW E90 M3 CRT.
Developed back in the early 2010s, the CRT nameplate stands for Carbon Racing Technology which already gives away what makes it so special. The special edition sedan was built using plenty of carbon fiber and carbon fiber reinforced polymer, a material that was extremely rare back then, not to mention expensive to make. Today BMW has an entire plant dedicated to CFRP production and cars like the i3 and i8 are infused with the ultra-light material.
However, back in 2011 we were living in completely different times and that’s why the E90 M3 CRT is a special bird. Of course, that’s not all. There were only 67 cars CRT models ever built and none of them were officially offered for sale in the US. Five of them were right-hand drive and the remaining 62 reached the driveways of some very rich and important people. The fact that you have the opportunity to buy one in the States is remarkable already, no matter the price.
Under the hood of the CRT hid the same engine used on the iconic BMW E92 M3 GTS. A reworked version of the S65 4-liter V8 with its capacity increased up to 4.4-liters and developing 450 HP, this mill is probably the best V8 BMW ever made. Chip in the lower weight compared to a standard M3 sedan due to the carbon fiber work and you get the picture.
To make things even better, the car that’s up for grabs on DuPont Registry also has just 250 miles on the clock and hasn’t even been registered, meaning it’s basically brand new. Sure, the $299,950 price tag might seem prohibitive but on the long run, it may become a profitable investment.
