If you know me well, you know E36 BMWs have their own little corner in my heart. Having owned an E36 for almost 10 years, being my first car and not selling it months shy of ten years, I get giddy anytime I see an E36 of any kind. I simply love them, despite being very, very flawed. So when I saw this very clean, very handsome E36 BMW M3 on Bring-A-Trailer, I was very excited.
At the moment, every BMW M3 is overpriced on the second-hand market. The E30 M3 is starting to get into six-figure territory for really nice examples, E46 M3s are getting into the $30k – $40k range and every M3 after that is too new to be affordable for most young enthusiasts. However, the E36 M3 is still affordable for now, so young enthusiasts should be looking at cars exactly like this.
This specific 1995 BMW M3 Coupe is currently up for auction and the current bid (at the time of writing this) is at $1,993. While it’s almost certainly going to go up quite a bit over the next five days, that’s an incredibly cheap starting point for such a great car. Especially considering the fact that it only has 76,000 miles on it. So it’s in fantastic condition, with only one small scratch on it. It’s also a black-on-black coupe with a five-speed manual, making it one of the most desirable E36 M3s on the second-hand market.
On the outside, it looks very clean, minus the aforementioned scratch. It’s wearing the classic 17″ E36 M3 wheels that say “BMW Motorsport” and it is completely unmolested. So the suspension stock and the body is devoid of any aftermarket add-ons. Its bone-stock nature makes it the perfect car for a young enthusiast, as it offers a blank slate. If you buy this car, you aren’t dealing with any modifications someone else did. To be honest, an unmodified E36 M3 is incredibly rare so this is surprising. The inside is also completely untouched and looks fantastic.
The only real downside of this specific car is that it’s a ’95 model year. So it uses the older 3.0 liter I6 engine that only made 240 hp. My 1996 BMW 328i had 190 hp. So this is only 50 hp more powerful than my very non-M 3 Series. Still, it’s fast enough to be fun, especially when mated to a five-speed manual.
Despite not having the better engine, this is still a very good car and one that could provide a young enthusiast old-school BMW thrills with classic good looks at an affordable price. It also offers a blank slate for an enthusiast to do with what they wish.
