The premium Sports Activity Coupe is bound to get even more crowded. After BMW and Mercedes, Porsche is now preparing a sleek-roofed SUV to compete with the X6, GLE and a future Range Rover Sport Coupe. The new SAC would be based on the next-generation Cayenne – due out in 2018 – and will also inherit some of the engine options. The engine line-up of the 2018 Cayenne will include turbocharged petrol and diesel units, as well as a hybrid option and a rumored electric powertrain.
Porsche could base its Cayenne Coupe electric powertrain technology on that of the confirmed Audi Q6 e-tron, which is due to arrive in 2018. The concept Q6 utilized power from three motors – one mounted up front, sending drive to the front wheels, and the remaining two sited at the rear, acting on the rear wheels.

The premium SUV segment has been growing over the last 12 months. Sales for most premium automakers were up as automakers prepare to enter the segment with new offerings. Jaguar has been testing its own electric SUV, same as Range Rover and its new SUV Coupe.
BMW saw sales of its X brand vehicles fall 32.7 percent last month (6,156) versus July 2015 (9,151). Year to date X brand units are off 7.4 percent compared to 2015 year to date. BMW sold 54,338 vehicles this year compared to 58,689 in 2015. That has resulted in BMW brand vehicles decreasing 4.4 percent overall in July compared to this time a year ago.
