When it was first introduced, the naturally aspirated BMW V10 S85 engine was a considered the jewel of BMW engines family. Released when the emission regulation weren’t so strict, the powerful V10 became over the years the icon of M cars, the engine that turned the E60 M5 into a success.

The high-revving V10 was designed to utilize power from a wide rev band and had a redline of 8250 rpm. It achieved well over over 100 bhp (70 kW) per liter, thus making it part of a select group of high horsepower engines. The S85 features a very high compression ratio of 12.0:1, exceeding the previous S54’s ratio of 11.5:1.

It was the engine BMW chose for the BMW E60 M5 and the BMW E63 M6 – both models coming with the same 507 hp (378 kW) and 520 Nm (384 lb·ft) torque output. This allowed the cars to accelerate from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in just 4.7 seconds for the M5 and 4.1 seconds for the M6, respectively.

It won numerous awards making it one of the most respected and decorated engines BMW has ever produced. But its allure is not all about performance, awards and power. For many it’s about the crisp and powerful sound, something you can hear in the video we’ve added below.
