Consumer Reports’ annual report on auto reliability – released Tuesday – shows BMW moving up three spots to No.11.
At the top sits Lexus and Toyota, followed by Audi. MINI comes in the 10th place, while Porsche and Mercedes placed 14 and 21, respectively. The top 10 rankings are dominated by Asian automakers. Fiat Chrysler continued to struggle with reliability. The Fiat brand ranked last among the 28 brands listed in the survey, coming in right behind its popular Jeep nameplate.
According to Consumer Reports, the “reliability Ratings show how well vehicles have held up and the odds that an owner could be inconvenienced by problems and repairs. A vehicle’s reliability can seriously affect how satisfied you’ll be with a car over the years, and it can significantly influence resale value when you’re ready to replace the vehicle.”
Furthermore, Consumer Reports surveys their magazine and website subscribers each year to ask about any serious problems they’ve had with their vehicles in the preceding 12 months. The data collected includes more than 740,000 vehicles.
The best car ever tested by Consumer Reports — Tesla Model S – has received a worse-than-average overall problem rate in the Annual Auto Reliability Survey. According to Consumer Reports, over 1,400 survey responses were received from Model S owner who chronicled an array of detailed and complicated maladies.
Last year, the Model S was rated as “average” in the reliability survey.
