People have been asking for Touring versions of M cars for a long time. And while for the M5 that dream came true, it turned out to be an exception instead of the rule. The F10 M5 didn’t come in an F11 M5 Touring version even though the enthusiasts were craving for one. The F90 model will also skip the Touring model and instead we will be getting a worthy alternative in the shape of the G31 BMW 5 Series Touring M550i.
Even though BMW didn’t take the veils off the new BMW G31 5 Series Touring, we know it’s coming. What we also know is that the sedan version now comes in a brand new version, an M Performance Automobile by the name of M550i. This new model will replace the old 550i versions and fill the gap between the 540i and the M5 performance-wise.
With 462 HP and 650 Nm of torque, it won’t be that hard to do it, especially since it has a sprint time to 100 km/h (62 mph) of just 4 seconds. That’s 0.3 seconds faster than the outgoing M5 and it says quite a lot about the car’s performance. Since the M550i badge will also be showing up on Touring 5 Series models, who needs an M5 Touring, right?
All the performance you’re going to need will be there. The V8 engine sound will also be there and if you decide to tune it, you might even outrun standard M5 models which is an impressive feat all in its own. The rendering here, done by Theophilus Chin, is quite dead on, and we’re reckoning that’s almost exactly how the new Touring 5 Series will look like, no matter if in M550i guise or not.
